Youth Belt Testing Overview

Belt tests consist of a series of techniques your child must perform to achieve a high score. To pass, the student must demonstrate confidence, accuracy, and complete knowledge of the movements being applied.

  • Minimum passing score: 80 points

  • Perfect score: 100 points

A perfect score earns the student our most prestigious recognition — the Honor and Merit Seal, awarded with their certificate.

The Structure

The test is divided into two parts:

Part One

The student must:

  • Correctly tie their belt

  • Recite the EJJ Creed

  • Demonstrate all mobility and strength drills flawlessly

These drills must be performed flawlessly. No hints, assistance, or demonstrations will be provided during this portion of the test. The student is expected to execute each movement with confidence and precision.

If the student:

  • Makes mistakes

  • Performs movements poorly

  • Requires help or verbal cues

The test will be cancelled and rescheduled for a future date. This policy is in place to ensure students only test when they are fully prepared and confident in their abilities. Once the student has practiced sufficiently and feels secure performing the drills independently, they may test again.

Mobility and strength drills consist of:

  • 10 push-ups

  • 10 sit-ups

  • Sprawls

  • Break fall

  • Technical stand-up

  • Front roll

  • Back roll

  • Pick-out drill

Part Two

The second portion of the test consists of 10 required technique drills, each worth 10 points, for a total of 100 points.

  • Up to 3 hints allowed per drill.

  • If hints are provided by the instructor, the drill will be scored at 5 points.

  • A maximum of three hints per drill is allowed.

  • If more than three hints are needed, or if the instructor must demonstrate the technique, the drill will be voided and receive 0 points.

This scoring system is designed to encourage preparation, independence, and confidence under pressure.

Final Notes

This stage of training is critical to your child’s development in Jiu-Jitsu. Discipline, focus, and commitment will determine their success. With the right mindset and preparation, your child is fully capable of rising to the challenge—and doing so with excellence.

We appreciate your continued support and dedication to your child’s growth on and off the mats.

See you at practice
