Born in South Brazil, Professor Joao Assis has been practicing Jiu Jitsu since 2000. He’s been a black belt since 2009 under the living legend and leader of Checkmat BJJ team: Leonardo Vieira. Dedicated and active competitor. Among his students are serious BJJ competitors, MMA Fighters, law enforcement officers, military personnel, children, hobbyists, fitness and self-defense enthusiasts. His accomplishments in BJJ are matched by only a few in the history of the sport. His greatest accomplishments are the Jiu Jitsu Worlds Championship, ADCC, Jiu Jitsu NoGi Worlds Championship, Pan-American Championship, American Nationals Championship and Grapplers Quest.
Noted by his opponents, training partners and students as a complete Jiu Jitsu mastermind, professor Assis is acclaimed to be one of the best Jiu Jitsu artists of his generation. He has some of the best takedowns, sweeps, guard passes, submissions and back attack games in the business. Restless, he’s always practicing to achieve excellence, inspiring and instilling passion in his students, not only in Jiu Jitsu but also in life. He has introduced hundreds of people to the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle. It is a positive way to live, eat and face life.
